Since they were young, the Sinclair grandchildren would come to Beechwood Island every summer, where nobody was a criminal, nobody was an addict and nobody was a failure. When Gat came to the island as the son of Aunt Carrie's boyfriend. Soon, they were Liars. They called this summer, Summer 8 and so that was the designated name of all summers throughout the novel.
When Candence first meets Gat, it is indeed love at first sight. This continues until summer 15 when they realise about each other. However, at the end of Summer 15, Candence suffers in an accident. She hits her head and ended up in hospital with amnesia and blistering migraines. As the reader, we nor Candence know what happened at the end of Summer 15. The best parts of this book are definitely her memories and realisations; from amnesia or not.
Lockhart did an incredible job with this book because it is so difficult to write successfully about amnesia. There are hints all over the book, yet we never notice them and find ourselves re-reading them to see where we missed important points. My only critique is that the ending leaves us wanting more. Of course, there is always the possibility that there is a sequel written for this book, which would give Lockhart a good point to start off with.
This book is blisteringly smart. It is a beautiful romance and has a twist to all make us upset. I loved it so much, only missing out on the ending.
Star Rating: ★★★★☆ / 4 out of 5 stars.
